When the past still lives in how you feel today
Complex PTSD can leave you carrying the weight of things that happened long ago — in the way you brace for danger, doubt yourself, or struggle to feel safe with people.
At IASH, our counsellors offer a gentle, trauma-informed space to heal, entirely at your pace.
(In person at our Bishan centre, or online)
You might function well on the surface — hold down a job, look after people, keep things moving — while privately feeling like you're always bracing for something to go wrong. Like there's a part of you that never fully relaxes, even when you're safe.
Maybe you're hard on yourself in a way that feels older than you can explain. Maybe trust comes slowly, or closeness feels risky. Sometimes an ordinary moment can flood you with a feeling that seems too big for what's actually happening — old emotion arriving without a clear reason attached. And underneath it, perhaps a quiet sense that you're somehow different from everyone else.
If this is familiar, it doesn't mean you're flawed or stuck this way. When difficult things go on for a long time — often beginning in childhood — the mind and body adapt to survive. Those adaptations have a name, they make complete sense, and with the right support, they can soften.
C-PTSD shows up differently for everyone
You may be experiencing some of these, if not all:
-
A harsh inner voice that criticises you far more than you'd ever judge anyone else
-
Feeling on guard or unsafe even when nothing is wrong
-
Emotional flashbacks — being flooded by old feelings without a clear memory attached
-
Finding trust, closeness, or vulnerability genuinely difficult
-
A shaky or shifting sense of who you are and what you're worth
-
Moments of feeling numb, distant, or disconnected from yourself or the world
These aren't signs of weakness. They're the marks of having coped with more than anyone should have to — and they can be worked through gently, over time.
