When love feels hard to hold onto
Even in relationships built on care, things can start to feel strained. It can be confusing and painful when the love is still there, but things don’t feel the way they used to.
At IASH, our counsellors offer a supportive space for couples to slow things down, understand what’s happening between them, and explore new ways of reconnecting.
(In person at our Bishan centre, or online)
Maybe you keep having the same argument in different forms — it starts small, but somehow ends in the same place every time. Maybe it’s quieter than that: things have just slowly drifted. Less talking, less closeness, more routine than connection. Sometimes one of you feels like something is really wrong, while the other thinks things are mostly fine — and that gap can feel lonely on its own.
Most couples don’t reach out for help straight away; there’s usually a period of hoping it’ll pass. So if you’re reading this together, or one of you has shared it with the other, that already says something.
Struggling doesn’t mean your relationship is beyond repair, and it doesn’t mean either of you is the problem. A lot of couples go through difficult stretches. What matters is not getting stuck in them alone.
Relationship struggle looks different for everyone
You may be experiencing some of these, if not all:
-
The same arguments on repeat, never quite resolved
-
Growing distance, or feeling more like housemates than partners
-
Communication that turns into criticism, defensiveness, or silence
-
A breach of trust you're not sure how to come back from
-
Different needs around intimacy, money, family, or the future
-
Overthinking or constant anxiety surrounding the relationship
Sometimes relationships activate old attachment wounds that go far deeper than the present moment.
